Doctors at Jinnah Hospital, Karachi, have achieved a major medical milestone by successfully performing the hospital’s first knee cancer surgery. The procedure restored mobility to a 26-year-old patient through the implantation of an artificial knee.

The surgery, which lasted four hours, was conducted by a joint team of orthopedic and plastic surgeons. Led by Dr. Farukh, the team removed a cancerous tumor from the patient’s knee and lower leg before implanting a prosthetic knee. Post-operative tests confirmed that the cancer had been completely eliminated.

The artificial knee, valued at between Rs1 million and Rs1.1 million, was provided free of charge by the hospital. Globally, such implants can last up to 25 years, ensuring long-term mobility. The entire surgery, worth an estimated Rs3.5 million, was performed without cost to the patient.

“This was a challenging case, but the outcome shows that such complex surgeries can be successfully performed locally,” Dr. Farukh said.

The operation team included orthopedic specialists Dr. Muzaffar, Dr. Wali, Dr. Shahid, and Dr. Khushal, as well as plastic surgeons Dr. Agha Waseem, Dr. Mehak, Dr. Komal, and Dr. Farooq.
