The Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) has announced that all Islamabad model schools and colleges will establish book banks starting from the academic year 2026–27.
The step is aimed at ensuring timely distribution of free textbooks and reducing the recurring shortage faced by students.
Under the new policy, students will be required to return their textbooks in good condition at the end of each academic year.
These books will then be collected, categorized, and redistributed to the next batch, creating a cycle of reuse that will benefit thousands of students in urban and rural areas alike.

School administrations have been directed to prepare standard operating procedures (SOPs) for book collection and stacking.
Area Education Officers will supervise the process, while proper records will be maintained for transparency.
Officials say the system will not only lower costs for families but also encourage students to preserve their books. By reducing printing demand, the initiative is also expected to promote environmental sustainability.
The notification, issued with approval of the Director (Academics & Quality Assurance), highlights the government’s broader education reforms to ease financial pressures on parents and strengthen accountability in schools.
