Saturdays declared teaching days in Karachi

Private schools in Karachi reopened on Thursday after being closed for a day due to heavy rains and urban flooding that paralyzed large parts of the city.

Chairman of the All Private Schools Management Association Sindh (APSMA), Syed Tariq Shah, confirmed the reopening and announced that Saturdays will now be used as teaching days.

The move is intended to help recover learning hours lost to frequent weather-related closures.

“Given the repeated disruptions, Saturdays will be observed as regular teaching days to minimize the academic setback for students,” Shah said.

Karachi has endured relentless rain over the past two days, which submerged low-lying areas and raised the water levels of the Malir and Lyari rivers. Major roads were left inundated, affecting mobility and daily life for millions of residents.

On Wednesday, authorities had ordered all educational institutions in Karachi Division to remain closed following warnings from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) of further monsoon downpours and thunderstorms.

The reopening of schools signals a gradual return to normalcy, though challenges remain in terms of transport and access for students in flood-affected areas.
